How to use it

From a list to fair teams in four steps

1

Paste the names

Add one participant per line. For balanced teams, add a rating after a vertical bar, such as Jordan | 5. Prefix a captain with an asterisk.

2

Choose the split

Set either the number of teams or the maximum players per team. The generator distributes any remainder so team sizes differ by no more than one.

3

Pick random or balanced

Random mode performs a fair shuffle. Balanced mode spreads 1–5 ratings and designated captains while keeping team sizes even.

4

Share the result

Rename teams if needed, then copy, print, or share a link that rebuilds the same draw. The participant list stays in the URL hash, not on the server.

Random vs balanced

Choose fairness for the situation

A random draw is best when neutrality matters and everyone is roughly equal. Skill-balanced mode is better for practices, pickup games, and classrooms where one stacked group would spoil the activity.

Ratings are deliberately simple. A 1–5 estimate is enough to distribute stronger participants without pretending the score is a scientific measurement.

Privacy: generation happens locally in the browser. Shared state is encoded after the # in the URL, which browsers do not send in HTTP requests.

Team setup gear

Take the draw onto the field

Once the teams are set, pinnies make sides visible and a coaching board keeps matchups and rotations clear.

Questions

Random team generator FAQ

How does the random team generator work?

It shuffles the participant list with the browser cryptography API when available, then deals people across evenly sized teams. Every reshuffle produces a new draw.

How do skill-balanced teams work?

Add a rating from 1 to 5 after each name. The generator spreads stronger players across teams while respecting each team’s target size. Equal-rated players are shuffled first, so balanced results do not always look identical.

How do I mark team captains?

Put an asterisk before a name, for example *Jordan | 4. When spread captains is enabled, the generator assigns captains to different teams before filling the remaining places.

What if the number of people does not divide evenly?

The remainder is distributed one person at a time. Team sizes differ by at most one, so a list of 10 people split into three teams becomes teams of 4, 3, and 3.

Are names uploaded or stored?

No. Team generation runs in the browser. The current setup is saved locally on that device, and a share link encodes the state in the URL hash so the server does not receive the names.

Can I use it for classrooms and work groups?

Yes. The tool is not tied to one sport. It works for pickup games, practices, classrooms, workshops, game nights, volunteers, and any list that needs fair groups.

Is the team generator free?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and supports up to 200 participants and 32 teams.
